What Is Adult ADHD?

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is often thought of as a childhood condition, but it frequently persists into adulthood. In adults, the hyperactivity component often manifests internally as extreme restlessness or racing thoughts, rather than outward physical movement.

"Adult ADHD primarily affects executive function: the brain's ability to plan, prioritize, start tasks, and regulate emotions and attention spans."

Many adults go undiagnosed for years because their high intelligence or rigid coping mechanisms mask their symptoms. This often leads to secondary issues like chronic burnout, anxiety, and depression as they struggle to keep up with the neurotypical demands of modern work and life.

Primary Subtypes

Inattentive Presentation

Difficulty sustaining focus, careless mistakes, frequently losing items, and severe executive dysfunction (inability to start a task despite wanting to). Often misdiagnosed as depression.

Hyperactive / Impulsive

Constant inner restlessness, interrupting others, impulsive decision making, and an inability to unwind. Often misdiagnosed as generalized anxiety disorder.

Framework & Transparency

Proprietary Screening Engine

This is a proprietary 20-item screener. Our questions were developed with reference to established frameworks including the DSM-5, the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS), and the Vanderbilt ADHD Rating Scale — but the tool does not implement or score those instruments directly.

Symptom Coverage

Questions span the two broad symptom domains described in DSM-5 — Inattention and Hyperactivity-Impulsivity — adapted for adult presentation. Results reflect a proprietary score, not a clinical DSM-5 evaluation.
